Public speaking is one of the essential components of communication at large. Quintessentially, public speaking is a process where one is speaking to a group of people. Most of the times, it is a structured process where the speaker informs, influences or entertains the audience. To give a speech is a part of public speaking. It is said that public speaking is an art. The ‘gift of the gab’ may not be there by one and all but public speaking is also a skill that can be easily developed and with practice one can overcome the fear of talking to the public and delivering a great speech. Most people are nervous and experience anxiety or butterflies in the stomach before making a public speech. This is quite natural.
Public speaking requires you to practice and understand subtle nuances of this art. Effective public speaking is not just about talking to a group of people. It requires you to connect with the audience emotionally. For this one requires the right kind of body language and eye contact to connect with the people listening to you. Facial expressions, posture, positivity, pronunciations, stress on words, personality, confidence are all very important components of public speaking.
Along with these components, the matter of your speech is of utmost importance. This of course depends on the purpose of the speech but content is king and one must spend maximum amount of time on developing a speech that uses easy but effective words. One must pay attention to the vocabulary that one uses. Keep the content simple. Adding a bit of humor to your speech is one of the ways to keep the attention intact. One can add a bit of humor to a speech on a series topic as well because this will help to lighten the mood.
Leaders in any field find themselves in places where they more often than not have to deliver speeches. Businessmen, political leaders, entrepreneurs and CEOS need to be effective communicators. Whether it is delivering a speech about the motivating employees, or to convincing partners to invest in a project or giving an inspirational speech to the audience, public speaking is required. Smile and use your hands to stress on important matters in your speech. Keep the speech crisp. Your speech should be neither too short nor too long. However, an effective persuader is the one who tries to convince and win over people by using logic and smart communication. The target audience should not feel that he or she has no choice but to succumb to what the persuader is saying. To be an effective persuader one must know how to balance things and maintain equilibrium. During a discussion, one must not lay too much importance on the gains from it. Instead lay more emphasis on what the other party will receive. Effective persuader is the one who tries to anticipate the expectations of the other.
Being in a positive frame of mind is also important. Apart from that, showing enthusiasm in words and action helps to get convinced. Gestures and facial expressions are all important parts of an effective persuader. A good persuader always tries to find out what the other is looking for in a negotiation and then strives to meet the demand. Honesty is a policy that is a must in an effective persuader. This is because when you try to persuade someone with all honesty, there are rare chances that he or she will refuse your offer or will not agree to you.
Being an effective persuader can help you in an organization. Not only will you be able to put forth your ideas and opinions but you will have the power to persuade your bosses and colleagues to implement those ideas. Persuasion is a considered to be a great leadership skill and is highly respected in the field of sales. Hence those who want to make a career in sales must keep in mind that being an effective persuader pays off in a big way. Negotiations and dealings can be carried out by a smart persuader in a much more effective manner and organizations are always on the look out for such effective persuaders.

Pronounce your words properly. Incase you aren’t not sure of any particular pronunciations; check them online before you use them.
Eye contact and body language also communicate. Make eye contacts with all your listeners. This will help you to get your listeners’ attention. Use your hands to emphasis certain points you want to stress on. You can also emphasis your point by slowly down your talking speed. Vary your volume so that your communication does not become monotonous. Facial expressions are also an important part of communication. Pay attention to your facial expression by practicing your speech in front of the mirror.
Listening is also an important aspect of communication and one must listen carefully. Concentrate on the message and screen out the distractions. To make good communication you need an alert mind. Concentrate well on what the other person is saying, think quickly and speak with brevity and confidence to create the right impression. Your communication should be such that you are able to paint a verbal picture to your listeners. Be concise and support your speech with accurate facts. Last but not the least, check your posture, dress appropriately, smile and be likeable.

This requires you to have good writing skills.
One of the basic requirements to improve your writing skills is to develop good reading skills. Read newspapers regularly. Pick up new words; understand sentence formation and understand the use of adverbs, adjectives and verbs. This will help one to develop short and brief sentences. Read various kinds of literature and study how language is used differently in different forms. Reading poems can also be a pleasurable experience. Try and use different writing skills – add some humor sometimes, use sarcasm, write bold motivating speeches, be narrative some other time…you may not be comfortable with all these styles of writing but this will help you to be familiar with different styles.
The third most important point is to be original and fresh. There are many writers in the market with stale style and set formats. To be original, fresh and witty can pay off really well! Writing should be thought provoking, inspirational and entertaining. Dig for facts and figures and weave your opinion on it to make it an interesting piece of information. Apart from seeking facts, people also read for pleasure – your writing should give them that. Polish your language on a continuous basis so that you do not fall in a pit of clichéd writing.
Writing is a continuous process of learning. To improve your writing skills you need to enjoy this art. Do not write for the sake of writing. Put your heart into it even if it is writing a simple mail. This does not mean that you use flowery language and exaggerate things but write in a way that communicates your idea clearly. Do not be afraid of criticism because it will only help to improve your skill. Use words judiciously and construct sentences that are easy to read. To develop your personality you need to first develop your inner self and then concentrate on your outer self. This means that one needs to first develop ones mind and soul and then work on your physical appearance. To do this, one can try yoga and meditation so that inner peace is achieved. Think positive and be cheerful and this will automatically reflect on your outer self. Bring about some change in your outer appearance like getting a new hair cut, changing ones wardrobe, eating right to get that glow on your skin and last but not the least wearing a smile – always. No one wants to meet a dull and a negative person. A joyful and a positive person will always be welcomed everywhere.
These things may not be a part of your educational curriculum but they are equally important because in today’s competitive scenario, your first impression is often your last impression and to make that first impression you need to dress right and talk right and hence the need for speech and personality development. So the next time you go for an interview or even casually meet up your friends, remember to keep the above mentioned tips in mind.
